Student Ambassadors as Strategic Partners: 5 Ways to Strengthen University Recruitment

Student ambassadors can do much more than answer questions about campus life. When integrated into a university’s recruitment strategy, they can help prospective students make confident decisions, provide valuable insights into student needs, and give enrollment teams more time to focus on meaningful conversations.
At Unibuddy’s Powered by Peers conference, we were joined by Katie Fox of the University at Buffalo, Richard James of Kennesaw State University, and Dr. Ashley Henna of the University of Michigan to discuss how institutions can make student ambassador programs more strategic.
Here are five key takeaways from their conversation.
Build a program that works for students
A successful ambassador program starts with the students themselves. Professional development, networking opportunities, recommendation letters, and recognition can all help ambassadors feel valued and motivated.
Just as importantly, institutions need to respect students’ time. Clear expectations, manageable workloads, and flexibility around exams and breaks help make participation sustainable.
Be intentional about who you recruit
Rather than relying solely on broad calls for applications, consider working with faculty, career services, and other campus teams to identify potential ambassadors.
The right approach will depend on your institution and audience. Some programs benefit from targeted invitations to high-performing students, while others value a more open approach that allows students from different backgrounds to participate and share their experiences.
The goal is to build a group that reflects the diversity of your student community and helps prospective students find someone they can relate to.
Use conversations to shape your recruitment strategy
Student ambassadors offer more than a personal connection. Their conversations can reveal what prospective students want to know, what concerns them, and when particular questions arise during the enrollment journey.
At the University at Buffalo, ambassador conversation insights have helped inform email campaigns and recruitment communications. For graduate programs, understanding how questions vary by degree and stage of the journey can make messaging more relevant.
These insights help teams move beyond assumptions and build communications around what students are actually asking.
Make the program work across teams
Ambassadors can support recruitment, content creation, campus events, and alumni engagement. Coordinating with other departments helps institutions make better use of students’ time and avoid asking them to repeatedly create similar content for different teams.
At Kennesaw State University, collaboration across recruitment, student engagement, and alumni teams helped establish a more coordinated approach to alumni ambassadors.
Measure impact and plan for scale
A larger ambassador program isn’t automatically a better one. Institutions need to monitor response times, engagement, and workloads to ensure students receive timely answers without ambassadors becoming overwhelmed.
Connecting engagement data with enrollment information can also help teams understand the program’s contribution. Richard James shared that more than 50% of Kennesaw State’s enrolled class had engaged with the platform or at least one ambassador, offering a useful indicator of reach.
Make student voices part of the strategy
Student ambassadors can strengthen recruitment when institutions treat them as partners rather than simply representatives. By combining authentic peer connections with actionable insights, coordinated planning, and thoughtful measurement, universities can create a better experience for prospective students while making their recruitment efforts more effective.
