Why no two days are the same as a product marketer at Unibuddy

Looking for your next adventure in Product Marketing? Check out our Product Marketing Manager position in our New York office.

I joined Unibuddy in December of 2020 – in the midst of a gloomy London winter. As an Aussie, the winters in London take some getting used to, and to make matters worse – we were also dealing with the latest phase of a never-ending lockdown.

Yet from day one at Unibuddy, the warmth that I felt from the entire global team made the lockdown winter frost feel like it was melting away.

Starting a new job remotely, despite becoming a common occurrence for people in recent times, felt daunting to me. But thanks to the smooth Unibuddy onboarding, and the support and encouragement I received from every single one of my new colleagues, I immediately felt reassured that I had joined the right company at the right time.

I’m now one month away from hitting my first Buddyversary (our way of marking each year you’re at Unibuddy). Looking back on my first year, what stands out the most are the incredible relationships I’ve forged across the business – both professionally and personally. There are so many people that I call a close friend, instead of just a colleague.

So, why do I do what I do, and why do I love it?

Product Marketing is all about our customers

Our customers are at the heart of what we do and the reason we exist. My role as our product marketing lead is to ensure all of our product innovation and strategy is centred around our customers and their needs. This relentless focus on helping our university partners is one of the reasons I love my job.

In my role I have direct access to our customers. I regularly connect with them to discuss their feedback on everything from our product performance and usability, to our development roadmap, and even commercial conversations related to our pricing.

I have found that being able to speak directly to customers is the only way to truly understand how we can take our vision and development and position it for success. Each customer I’ve spoken to has its own unique perspective, and I love taking this feedback to create case studies and testimonials, while bringing back this front-line research to help shape our ongoing strategy.

Making an impact as a growing function within the business

Product marketing is a relatively young concept in tech. It has been an amazing experience for me to be able to grow the function within Unibuddy and see it make a meaningful impact both internally and externally.

Despite it being a new function for the business, I have been met with nothing but openness and enthusiasm from the commercial and product teams towards the value and importance of product marketing. I’ve encountered endless opportunities to really get my hands dirty in the role, and I’ve worked on really exciting projects.

This has ultimately allowed for the introduction of new processes and ways of working that are helping to ensure we get the right information into the right hands within the business, at the right time.

Here are just some of the projects I’ve been involved in:

  • Repositioning the Unibuddy brand with the market and internal stakeholders
  • Launching new products and functionality, and getting this into the hands of our customers
  • Reshaping and redesigning our website
  • Working with design to deliver key pieces of video content to support our commercial teams and convey the value of our products

Our people

Without a doubt my favourite thing about product marketing at Unibuddy is the people I get to work with every day. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of an amazing marketing team, with every individual being brilliant at what they do and always there to provide support.

But the great thing about product marketing is that your role sits across many other functions of the business, and thus I also get to work every day with amazing product and engineering folks, sales and customer success teams, support teams, finance, research and our C-suite, – quite literally everyone!

And through my experience of working with people across the business – all I can say is that the people at Unibuddy are a hard working bunch. We bring our whole selves to work, and believe me when I say there is never a dull moment!

Some of my favourite aspects of our culture include:

  • The focus on learning – each individual is allocated a budget to support this
  • A flexible working policy – the choice between coming onto our campus (AKA: office) or at home. More info here if you’re interested
  • We’re a social bunch – everyones is always up for a drink, a laugh, or even just a chat
  • And of course I have to mention that we throw great company and team socials!

Ultimately we are a great mix of people from different cultures who love to collaborate across borders. As an Aussie in London that comes from a Russian background – I look forward to welcoming more people into our great team, and teaching each of them how to say a Russian toast over their drink of choice!

Each day of my 11 months has been different than the one before, and I can’t wait to see what new challenges and exciting moments await in my second year on the team.

I’m currently hiring for a Product Marketing Manager to come and join my growing team here at Unibuddy – check out the role here.
